information

A number of West Berliners have to cross the border every day to get home. They live in exclaves: small plots of land belonging to West Berlin, outside of the city limits and surrounded by GDR territory.

One such exclave is Eiskeller near Spandau. Another is Steinstücken, situated south of the Western district of Zehlendorf outside the parish of Wannsee and part of the American sector of West Berlin since 1945. Residents are only allowed to enter West Berlin via a guarded path passing through the forest and two border crossings.

Of a total of ten exclaves that existed during the Cold War, Steinstücken was the only one that was permanently inhabited.
